Selamualeykum dear brothers and sisters,

I would like to know what you have to do immediately after birth of a child, according to the Sunnah. The practice of the Sunnah is an essential aspect in the life of a Muslim, I strongly would like to practice it on special occasions. Would be nice if someone could help me with ahadith or verses.

Chezakullahu chayren in advance =)

Aleykumselam we rahmetullah brother,

Well I know a Sunnah, which you practice after birth:

A brother I know has recently received a son. He told me that he chewed a date according to the Sunnah, then rubbed it at his fingertips. Afterwards he rubbed the palate of his newborn child with his finger.

A nurse saw this and rushed worried and wondered what he was doing. He told her that our Prophet (s) made this with newborns and that it is a Sunnah of the Muslims.

She was very surprised, because scientists have recently found out that children after birth have a sugar shortage. While honey or pure sugar would be harmful for the child, the date is good because of the many vitamins that it has. But you can't also paint a whole date or broken pieces of it on the palate of a newborn child. Thus, a relative have to chew the date and grind it with a finger to produce a runny consistency.

I hope I could help you =)

Another Sunnah is:

The whisper of Adhan and Iqama:
The first ritual to receive the newborn is the whisper of the adhan (first call to prayer) into the right ear and the Iqama (second call to prayer) in the left ear of the newborn, immediately after his birth. While whispering you should be directed to the Kaaba.

"The Prophet (s) whispered the first call to prayer in the ear of Hasan ibn Ali and the second call to prayer in his left ear, on the day of his birth."

Es-Selamualeykum wr wb,

I also know a Sunnah that one should do after birth, which is:
Seven days after the birth of the infant you should (whether boy or girl) cut the hair after his Aqiqa. After the haircut, the weight of the hair has to be weight in silver. Then the equivalent of the cut hair has to be donated for a charity. You can donate the amount especially to the needy and the poor as Sadaqa. In case of no possibility to calculate the weight of the hair with the current value of silver, the equivalent can be estimated and then donated.

While cutting the hair of new-born child it is forbidden to cut some parts of the hair, while leaving other uncut . This action is called in Arabic "QAZ'". The Prophet (s) prohibited it.

Abdullah Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: "The Messenger of Allah (s) has forbidden the QAZ."
(Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

When his second grandchild, Husein, was born, the Prophet (s) sacrificed for him a lamb and said to Fatima ®, "Fatima, cut his hair and donate the weight of his hair in silver."
(Narrated by At-Tirmidyy, Al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi)
